Rotterdam, November 17, 2010

After our morning in Kinderdijk we sailed on to Rotterdam, once the busiest port in the world. It is still a busy place with lots of waterfront and lots of commercial activity. Our ship was built in a Rotterdam ship yard in 2005. Bridges soar over the waterways in various styles of architecture, and modern buildings rise above the waterfront. Rotterdam suffered massive bombing in the war, and after the war the decision was made not to try to restore the old, rather build with the new, and look forward.

Entering Rotterdam...

The modern UniLever building vaults over some of the older waterfront structures

The original home of the Holland American Line. Many American immigrants left from this port for the new world.
