Koblenz to Rudesheim, November 23, 2010

We woke this morning docked in Koblenz at a park at the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine Rivers. A huge statue of Kaiser Wilheim I, the first emperor of united Germany was staring down at us from astride his huge horse.

After breakfast we loaded up the buses and traveled through Koblenz for a tour of Marksburg Castle, high above the Rhine.

Marksburg has been left relatively unscathed from all the battles through the ages...

The views of the river are spectacular...

There is a herb garden...

Kitchen...

Spinning wheel close to the window for light...

Blacksmith shop...

And lots of armor...

We met back up with the ship and set sail up the Rhine through the area known for its many castles atop the hills on both sides of the river. Unfortunately, the day was cloudy, the camera doesn't have much zoom, and the boat was moving, so there aren't many good pictures. But the scenery was spectacular from the ship's lounge. Jack enjoyed making quick sketches, also trying to take a picture from time to time, and Kelly kept busy drawing a map of the river with the names of the castles.

Vineyards...

Small towns...

A few of the castles...

And castles on islands, the better to collect taxes and tolls...

Another island castle.

Night fell as we docked in Rudesheim, which was all decked out with its Christmas Market.
