Les Trois Rois

Right off the Marketplatz, at the foot of the oldest bridge across the Rhine, is Basel's oldest and most famous Hotel, Les Trois Roi. Royalty and dignatries stay here in suites, some costing over $4000 a night. Bell men attend the door--it is all quite posh. The story is told that Michael Jackson booked in here, but the hotel declined to register him as a guest because he was traveling with his pet monkey. Both Michael and the monkey had to stay at the Hilton.

As big snow flakes fell on Wednesday afternoon, we decided to have tea at Les Trois Roi. The crowd was slim and we were given a table by the windows overlooking the Rhine. We don't travel with a monkey.

The Christmas tree.

The beautiful chrystal chandelier...

The tea room with the river beyond the windows...

Will madam be pouring her own tea? Yes, she will; she wouldn't want to risk anything being spilt on her very well-worn blue jeans, thank you.

The snowy view of the bridge...

The iron railings collecting snow...

And the front of the hotel, someone's Bentley left in the drive, and the three kings bearing gifts at the top of the picture.
