Cologne, November 21, 2010

Leaving Arnhem around dinnertime, we arrived in Cologne after breakfast. Our walking tour took us around the old town, arriving finally at the magnificent cathedral, begun in 1248 with the work continuing off and on for seven
centuries.

Arriving in Cologne...

One of our ship's crew said they had never seen the cathedral without scaffolding--the maintenence goes on continuously...

Stunning...

Other buildings in the old town are interesting, as well...

Narrow houses face the waterfront...

Wonderful little details grace the buildings...

Not to sure what these guys are up to...

A rather spooky chain saw carving peeks his head around some Christmas trees in the Christmas Market that is preparing to open.

A monument to the man who introduced "eau de Cologne," forever linking the name of the city with its most famous product.

The cathedral with its gothic arches...

And beautiful stain glass windows. There was a Sunday Mass taking place when we visited, and the boys' choir, along with the adult choir was singing. The church was surprisingly full of people, and this was not the only Mass said on that day.

Meanwhile, outside the cathedral and Mass the human problems continue. These police officers had picked up these two young girls for stealing or pickpocketing. The girls were calm and waited patiently for the procedures to conclude. After looking at papers, calling on the telephone, the police let the girls go and they made their way out of the church plaza. Looking at the whole thing, it seemed like both the girls and the police had done this whole process numerous times. The girls looked so little and young. Inside the church and ouside the church, they are sure singing from different hymnbooks.
